Department of Labor and NACE Internship Guidelines

  • The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the employer’s facilities, is similar to training that would be given in a vocational schools.
  • The internship experience is for the benefit of the student.
  • The intern does not displace regular employee, but works under the close observation of a regular employee.
  • The employer provides the training and derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern.
  • Occasionally, the operations may actually be impeded. The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship.
  • The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time in the internship.

On-Campus Recruiting Policies

  1. All degree related internships and full time employment will be promoted through The Career Center electronic recruitment system.
  2. No home based business will be advertised or promoted through the Career Center.
  3. All employment representatives participating in the On-Campus Recruiting Program  and/or posting through the Lionslink system agree to follow selection, recruiting, and interview guidelines suggested through the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the NACE Principles for Professional Practice.
  4. All employers need to review the  TCNJ EEO Policy and NJ State Policy.
  5. Third Party Recruiters when posting a position must list the organization they are recruiting for in order to post in lionslink.
  6. Guidelines when hiring accounting majors are established on an annual basis by faculty career staff and accounting employers.
  7. Internship Procedures and Experiences are extremely valued at TCNJ In the one year out survey TCNJ students/Alumni report gaining an average of 2 semesters of experiential learning
  • The Career Center encourages employers to consider paid internship experience providing college degree based work.  Results from this survey show over 50% of internship experiences were paid. If the internship is not paid we strongly recommend the experience be for college credit/units. Please note the School Engineering strongly encourages internship experiences but does not provide academic credit.
  • NACE – Setting Intern Salaries
  • For a student to obtain academic credit for the internship experience the student needs to go to Records & Registration (located in Green Hall) and complete the appropriate Records & Registration form and paperwork.
  • Students must also submit an Internship Enrollment Form from their respective department that houses their major, IF there is a specific form from the academic department. Otherwise, refer to the form above.
  • Often the employer is required to complete a form listing 3 learning objectives and outcomes related to the experience.
  • There is a very short window for a student to Drop or Add a course during the Fall and Spring Semester. The Career Center encourages you to post positions within the LionsLink system in August for a fall semester experience and November for a Spring semester experience.
  • To provide a length of time per unit/credit the following can serve as a guideline.

.25 units (1 credit) = 50 hours of experience
.5 units (2 credits) = 100 hours of experience
.75 units (3 credits) = 150 hours of experience
1 unit (4 credits) =  200 hours of experience

Employer Criteria & Standards to be Considered in Development of an Internship
Established through National Association of Colleges and Employers

1. The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.

  • The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
  • The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications.
  • There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
  • There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
  • There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor.
  • There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning objectives/goals.
  • To view the Position Statement on Internships provided by NACE in its entirety click here.

2.  An internship often includes a hourly rate or wage. When the internship does not include payment the student needs to have this experience as a credit bearing internship. This type of experience is listed in the internship description as “For Credit Only.”In order for a student to gain credit they will need to complete paperwork for their academic department and the form required through the Records and Registration. It is the student’s responsibility to provide you any forms to be completed in a reasonable time. All schools within TCNJ encourage internship experiences. The School of Engineering strongly encourages this but does not supply credit for this experience due to the curriculum intensity.

3.  The Time of posting can be critical when credit is involved. There is a small window for a student to drop/add a course.
When posting an internship:

  • For the Fall semester it is important to post on August. The Drop and Add period usually occurs in the first week of September.
  • For the Spring Semester posting a position in November.  Drop and Add period occurs in late January
  • For Summer it is recommended to begin posting in November-February with more flexibility in completing time frames for paperwork.

4.  Hours: An internship during the academic year ranges from 10-12 hours with the exception of accounting (see accounting guidelines). A general rule for time in relationship to credit is:

25 units (1 credit) = 50 hours of experience
.5 units (2 credits) = 100 hours of experience
.75 units (3 credits) = 150 hours of experience
1 unit (4 credits) =  200 hours of experience

5.  When creating an internship description be sure to have a small description of your organization, duties, qualifications, list 2-3 learning objectives gained through this experience, approximate start date and end date, date of resumé resumés, contact person (with email and US mail address). Feel free to contact the Career Center to review.

Offers

TCNJ Career Center staff  encourages a minimum of a 2 week time frame as a reasonable time for candidates to get back to the employer regarding their decision as encouraged by NACE.

The exception to this is the accounting positions. Guidelines for accounting majors are established on an annual basis through the faculty, employer and career staff.

Rescinded or Delayed Offers

Should there be a need for your organization to defer start dates or rescind offers for students, The Career Center personnel ask that you notify our office prior to contacting students affected by this. The Center staff  would like the opportunity to discuss with you the student(s) involved and the particular circumstances surrounding the deferred start date or rescinded offer.

Room Scheduling & Cancellations

If there is a cancellation please contact the Career Center as soon as possible. When cancelling a presentation or event when food has been ordered, payment will need to be provided if less than 2 weeks notice.
